why my biggest copywriting client wanted to fire me (embarrassing)

True story:

I discovered freelance copywriting in 2016. 

At the time, my goal was to use this new skill to start a business and become my own boss. 

But I didn’t know anything about: 

- offers
- funnels
- paid ads
- email marketing
- etc etc

Let alone what it took to build something from scratch.

I had lots of debt and barely a shekel to my name.

(in other words, your typical dreamer obsessed with “cReAtInG pAsSiVe iNcOmE” lol)

I fantasized about making six figures…

Yet what I really wanted was to find a way to stop trading time for money. 

I wanted FREEDOM more than anything… 

Aka being able to work & live where, when, and how I wanted. 

I wanted to feel as successful on the inside as other people seemed to think I was on the outside.

This drew me to writing long-form sales letters and VSLs.

After gobbling up Scientific Advertising, The Ultimate Sales Letter, Ogilvy on Advertising, and any other marketing textbook I could find on torrent sites…

I saw it as the most reliable path to 100k a year.

Now this may shock you, but:

Writing long-form copy that converts on cold traffic is actually really frigging hard.

Despite my best efforts, I racked up flop after flop.

It was embarrassing.

Luckily, I persuaded my biggest client to let me take a stab at writing some emails for them on a performance deal…

Meaning I got nothing upfront, but would earn a (big) percentage of anything I sold.

Thank God for that.

You see, aside from the fact that they were about to fire me…

One of the story-driven emails I wrote for them did just about 7k in sales…

Making me almost $1,500.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

The kicker?

This email took me less than 30 minutes to spin up.

At that point, I decided to go all in on writing emails for other people.

And over the next several years, I developed the skills & systems to sell just about anything with simple story-driven emails.
