midas touch

Confession:

I sent out an email recently that completely flopped.

I won’t reveal which one it was…

Because it’s irrelevant.

The important is:

Some of the emails you write are going to flop.

No matter how much effort you put in or how much experience you’ve got.

It comes with the territory.

Like a stand-up comedian workshopping new material.

Fortunately, we as newsletter publishers aren’t the only ones destined to suffer this cringeworthy fate.

Nor is ours the most public variety.

Case in point:

I recently watched a movie called Argylle, which was directed by Matthew Vaughn.

This is the same director behind movies like:

- Stardust
- Kick-Ass
- Layer Cake
- X-Men: First Class
- And the Kingsman series

All films I thoroughly enjoyed.

But guess what?

Argylle turned out to be a steaming turd from start to finish.

I’m still struggling to wrap my head around how such a talented director could churn out a piece of unmitigated garbage like that

I honestly thought he had the “Midas Touch”...

Because everything of his I’d ever seen was golden.

Nevertheless, it’s a helpful reminder:

Failure comes for us all in the creativity business.

In fact, to go a step further:

If you don’t have any flops, you’re probably not taking big enough swings.

And truth is, this is why I love email as a medium.

Instead of dumping millions of dollars and years of your life into ONE single swing…

Where the stakes are as high as can be…

Every day is a new opportunity for you and me to get it right.

And if we don’t?

Who cares!

The stakes couldn’t be lower.

None of your readers will ever know what the open rate, CTR, or sales were for that email.

All you have to do is move on and write the next one.

If you’d like to learn how to write more winners…

(and how to brush off the inevitable bombs)
