He’s sold 2 million books… but his writing is meh (here’s why)

I’m writing a nonfiction book.
I’m not ready to say much more about the topic just yet…
But my goal is to write it & publish it by the end of 2024.
And as part of the research process, I’ve got a longish list of books to read.
Two of which are:
- Deep Work
- Digital Minimalism
Both were written by Cal Newport.
His books have sold over 2 million copies and been translated in 40 different languages.
Now, I’ve listened to several podcasts with Cal…
And found him to be incredibly insightful.
So I’ve been hella fired up to (finally) read these 2 bestselling books…
… That is, until I actually started reading them.
Why?
They’re both boring AF.
Don’t get me wrong - the information itself is solid…
And it’s backed up by all kinds of anecdotes and scientific studies…
But my goodness…
I’d rather wander up and down the aisles at the grocery store until the end of time than muscle my way through these two books.
Part of it is because each could be about 200 pages shorter…
But the bigger reason is because they’re both drier than a desert at high noon.
Nothing struck me as innately counterintuitive…
(focus = good, social media = bad)
And there’s no personality.
So they’re not much fun to read.
Unfortunately, the same thing can be said for most people’s marketing emails.
Sure, the content may be good…
But they’re so boring they could qualify as a sleep aid.
And nothing kills consumption faster than boredom.
So if you want people to actually enjoy reading and taking action on your emails…

P.S:
Life is good.
I’ve spent the day reading on the beach 😎

Next up on my list is Essentialism by Greg McKeown.
It’s come up multiple times in conversation with different people recently…
Feels like the universe is trying to tell me something.
