In my last email, I discussed the importance of Thank You Page offers as a growth tactic.

This is a crucial concept.

Yet there’s another layer to unpack…

And it’s got to do with monetization.

Specifically:

Earnings per subscriber.

This refers to how much revenue you generate per subscriber, per month.

And it’s the golden monetization metric.

The one newsletter KPI to rule them all.

Why?

Because it’s the only way to compare apples to apples.

Doesn’t matter whether you mail once a day or once a month…

Have 100 subscribers on your list or 100,000…

Or whether you monetize via sponsorships, product sales, or client work.

Earnings per subscriber (EPS) tells the story of how effectively you’re converting those subscribers & sends into dollars.

A good EPS to shoot for is $1.

For example:

If you’ve got 1,000 subscribers…

This means you should be earning at least $1,000 per month from your newsletter.

Now, the easiest way to do this is with a story-driven newsletter like mine.

Not only can you mail more often…

But it’s also highly effective for selling your own products and services.

(Last month, my EPS was $0.74. This month, I expect it to be ~$1.50.)

However:

You may want to use a different content template, such as an expert or curation-style newsletter, where product sales are not the main monetization strategy.

That’s okay.

To succeed with any of these other content templates though…

You need SCALE.

Since you’re doing less direct selling, you need lots more subscribers to make up the difference if you want to hit (or exceed) the $1 earnings per subscriber target.

Which is where Thank You Page offers tie in:

Because having a way to liquidate your ad costs…

Or put some profit in your pocket so you can justify investing more time and energy into creating organic content…

Is the ultimate unlock for faster growth.

Put another way:

Thank You Page offers aren’t limited to story-driven newsletters.

In fact, they’re even MORE important for anyone operating any other type of email newsletter.

You have to solve the acquisition equation if you want to grow quickly.

Or turn your newsletter from a hobby into a real business.

Hopefully that’s starting to sink in.

Understanding these simple economics is essential to winning the game.
