creator conundrum


Story time:
When I started publishing this newsletter back in March 2023…
I focused exclusively on tactical content.
Each week, I wrote a new ‘how-to’ guide or shared a new step-by-step framework.
Even though this ran counter to my experience working for clients and selling through storytelling…
It’s what every other successful creator appeared to be doing.
So, I set aside my preconceived notions and followed along.
And… it worked.
(Or so I thought.)
My audience on social media slowly began to grow…
And a good portion of those folks joined my newsletter.
It wasn’t until I tried launching my first product a few months later that I realized my blunder:
I’d blurred the lines between free & paid.
You see, there I was, giving away high-quality ‘how-to’ information each week for free…
When all of a sudden, now I wanted people to pay for it?
It was understandably confusing.
Here’s another way to frame this creator conundrum:
Healthy relationships are built on boundaries.
In other words, it’s your job to teach other people how to treat you.
And the problem with tactical content + an obsessive focus on “delivering value” is…
You’re teaching people to expect your best work for free.
A decision that makes it tough to cultivate an audience of buyers who can support your business.
So finally, I threw out the conventional creator playbook…
And went back to my bread and butter:
Email Storyselling.
And you know what?
Some people did complain and unsubscribe.
Yet refocusing my newsletter around storytelling allowed me to reignite demand among the subscribers who did stick around.
Fast-forward to now:
My list is growing steadily each month through ads…
(thanks to an offer I launched to my list)
And I look forward to each & every newsletter I write.
Life is good 🤘
