My big fat Beehiiv payday (screenshot inside)

Exciting news:
I recently got an offer from the Beehiiv Ad Network to run a sponsored ad in my newsletter.
The estimated payout?
A whopping $5.31:
This is because the ad pays out on a $2 cost-per-click (CPC) basis…
And since my newsletter’s only had a measly 750 subscribers at the time…
Beehiiv’s not exactly projecting an avalanche of clicks.
(Safe to say I won’t be moving into the penthouse just yet.)
Now, despite the paltry payday…
This experience reveals a valuable lesson for solopreneurs:
Content-driven emails are NOT the best way to monetize a small list.
In fact, they might be the WORST way.
That’s because you need 50,000 - 100,000+ followers or subscribers to earn a respectable income from selling ads inside your newsletter.
For example:
If you mail once a week…
You’d need to drive 2,500 clicks per month to earn $5k in revenue at this rate.
That’s 625 clicks (on an ad, mind you) per email.
A lofty benchmark most of us not named Justin Welsh will never reach.
That’s why I’m such a big fan of sending personality-driven emails instead.
Not only are they far more effective for…
- Building a healthy bond with your email subscribers
- Positioning you as an authority
- And attracting clients & customers who vibe with you
… but they’re also a hell of a lot more fun to write.
I dunno about you…
But writing nitty gritty “how to” content makes me want to roll up into in a ball and cry sometimes lol
Anyway…
